WHO WE ARE
The Maru Research Center is an independent research station located on the northern shore of Lake Malawi at Kande Beach. In association with Aquanuts Divers, local fishers and various other Malawian organizations we conduct research and monitoring programs on Lake Malawi. Our goal is to help Malawians better understand the Lake both from an environmental perspective and a socio-economic one and to aid them in sustainably managing the resources that it provides. We welcome collaborative efforts both with organizations inside Malawi and those further abroad and provide various opportunities for individuals to work with us in our research
Lake Malawi is home to an estimated 1000 species of cichlid fish, making it the most biologically diverse lake on the planet. Above you can a few of the fish that we monitor on our underwater surveys. However roughly 1/3 of the lake's species are still waiting to be properly scientifically described. There is a lot of work still to be done!
We believe that knowledge is powerful. The more we can learn about Lake Malawi and those who depend on it, the better we can take care of it. Click here to learn more about our research and monitoring programs.

Creating knowledge is not enough. It must be shared. At The Maru we work hard to disseminate our findings and to teach others how to conduct basic research themselves. Click here to learn more.
With knowledge and education comes a responsibility to take care of Lake Malawi and the people who depend on it. We believe that conserving the Lake is vital to the future well-being of Malawi. Click here to learn more.
