RESEARCH & CONSERVATION
The Maru is dedicated to studying Lake Malawi. Our research programs collect baseline environmental data on the biodiversity, fisheries, and water quality of the lake and our environmental education programs strive to promote an appreciation for the beauty of the Lake and the need to use its resources wisely.
WATER QUALITY MONITORING
Our underwater population and biodiversity surveys aim to collect data on the lake's most famous fish family, the Cichlidae. Lake Malawi is home to nearly 1000 species of cichlids alone. Check out our data!
Our water quality monitoring program collects water samples from the lake and from several rivers. Our goal is to create a record of the quality of the water entering the lake and to monitor its effects. Check out our data!
Our environmental education programs seek to create a understanding of the lake as a place of beauty that deserves our respect and protection.
Our fisheries monitoring program works with local fishing communities to document the level of fishing pressure on the lake and to determine its sustainability.
